The Troy Trojans lost a lot of players in the transfer portal after head coach Scott Cross accepted the same position at Georgia Tech. New head coach Adam Howard announced Troy’s newest player Jayme Kontuniemi.

Kontuniemi arrives to Troy after spending the last season with the Wolfpack. He played for Howard while he was an assistant coach at NC State under Will Wade who has returned to LSU. Kontuniemi was redshirted last season and did not log any minutes of playing time.

Before signing with NC State, he played in his home country of Finland and was part of the U18 National Team in 2023. He joins three-star small forwards Caden Diggs (UMBC) and Robert Davis (Old Dominion) as transfer portal signings. Diggs averaged 10.8 points per game for the 2025-26 season. For Davis, he averaged 9.6 points for the 2025-26 season. He has potential for a better scoring output after averaging 15.6 points for the 2024-25 season.

The Troy Trojans will enter the 2026 college football season with an advantage most teams do not have: two quarterbacks with quality playing experience. Head coach Gerad Parker hopes they can stay healthier at the position than they did during his first two seasons at Troy.

Another storyline surrounding the quarterbacks will be new offensive coordinator Adam Austin. He replaces Sean Reagan, who served as offensive coordinator during Parker’s first two seasons with the Trojans. Austin comes to Troy from FCS program Tarleton State. Last season, the Texans averaged 42.4 points and 436.7 yards per game.

Here is a look at the Trojans’ quarterbacks for the 2026 season.

Goose Crowder

The favorite to be the starting quarterback when the Trojans open the season against Sam Houston on Sept. 5 is Goose Crowder. The senior from Gardendale, Alabama, has played well when he has been on the field for Troy. However, staying on the field has been the biggest question.

In three seasons with the Trojans, Crowder has thrown for 1,963 yards and 17 touchdowns. Since taking over as the starter in 2024, he has played in just 12 games. He appeared in only four games in 2024 and eight games in 2025.

Tucker Kilcrease

When Crowder was injured in the third game of the season against Memphis, Tucker Kilcrease took over until Crowder returned on Nov. 13 against Old Dominion. Crowder suffered a broken collarbone against the Tigers in a 28-7 loss.

Kilcrease started the next six games for Troy, leading the Trojans to a 5-1 record during that stretch. He passed for 1,537 yards and nine touchdowns while completing 59% of his passes.

His best performance came against Texas State in a 48-41 overtime victory. In that game, Kilcrease threw for 415 yards and five touchdowns while completing 30 of 39 passes. He helped lead Troy to five consecutive victories before the Trojans lost to Arkansas State.

Rodge Waldrop

After enrolling at Georgia State out of high school, Rodge Waldrop transferred to East Mississippi for the 2025 season.

In four games, Waldrop threw for 838 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions. He completed 88 of 144 passes for a 61% completion percentage. His team went 2-2 in his starts.

Jack James

Freshman Jack James rounds out the Troy quarterback room. He appeared in just one game during the 2025 season, taking three snaps against Old Dominion, with one resulting in a sack.

James had an outstanding high school career in Kentucky. During the 2024 season, he led Paducah Tilghman to a 15-0 record and the Kentucky 4A State Championship.

247Sports rated him as a three-star prospect in the 2025 recruiting class, and James was ranked as the No. 17 player in Kentucky. He should enter the season as the favorite to be Troy’s third-string quarterback.
